Honoring Social Justice Leaders Worldwide

Biography of Sarita Pariyar

Sarita Pariyar, born in 1988, completed her MA in sociology at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu and is deeply involved with social justice issues. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in journalism and English literature from Tribhuvan University. Currently she is completing a Bachelor’s in Law at Nepal Law School. Initially trained as a journalist, she is a board member of Samata Foundation, a respected think-tank that works for the rights and dignity of Dalits in Nepal. In addition, she is involved with several activist groups in Nepal and regularly participates in various forums for social justice, democracy, and media within and outside of Nepal.

Born and raised in a Dalit family in Basamadi village in Makwanapur district, Sarita knows the price one has to pay for being a woman and a Dalit in Nepali society. Through sheer diligence and determination, she completed her schooling and went on to work as a journalist for Hetauda Sandesh, a local daily, where she wrote about issues of social justice.  She was 19 when she met Suvash Darnal, in whom she found a like-minded partner, a supportive friend and an inspiring mentor. They had been married for only four years, and were raising a two-year-old daughter, when Suvash died in a tragic accident. Sarita retained her courage in the face of grief. Despite the severe emotional and social challenges of sudden widowhood, she decided to continue her graduate studies and pursue the cause of social justice through study and activism.

Her decision to design, launch, and support the annual Suvash Darnal Award for Social Justice is shaped by her deep commitment to the vision of a just and equal society. Through this Award, she also hopes to continue the legacy of her late husband, a prominent crusader of the rights of Dalits and other excluded groups in Nepal.

"तपाइँले चिया खाएको गिलास माझ्नु पर्ने ठाउँमा गिलास फोड्नुहुन्छ भने त्यो पनि दलित आन्दोलन हो । तपाइले गरेका विद्रोहहरु पनि लेखिनु पर्छ । हाम्रो इतिहास हामीले नै लेख्नुपर्छ ।" किन लेख्ने दलित युवाले ? #Padamsundas
